Wig-L-Bug Grinding Mill

The Wig-L-Bug is an invaluable accessory for the spectroscopy laboratory. It is ideal for mixing and pulverizing samples for use in a KBr matrix that will be pressed into a pellet and for mulling techniques. Sample preparation is reproducible from sample to sample by replicating the cycle time, which is controlled by a 60-second timer. Most samples can be prepared in 10 seconds. Agate, metal and plastic sample vials are available. 115 volts only.

Digital Wig-L-Bug

The Digital Wig-L-Bug features a keypad programmable timer (0 to 30 seconds), and can be programmed on the keypad to run at four (4) speeds: 3800, 4200, 4600 and 4800 RPM. This Model uses a polymer threaded screw type vial and a stainless steel ball pestle which comes with the unit. An optional stainless steel liner for the polymer vial is available. See Fig. 1. (Accessories for the standard Wig-L-Bug are not compatible with this model except for the Agate Vial Assembly and PTFE Vial Assembly). Electrical: 120 volts, 60 hertz.

Wig-L-Bug Model 30

The Model 30 Wig-L-Bug has the same components as the standard Wig-L-Bug, except that is has a mechanical 30 minute timer instead of an electronic 60 second timer. Since the timer is mechanical, the Model 30 can be used in countries with 50 hertz power. A transformer for this unit is available. The Model 30 uses the same accessories as the standard Wig-L-Bug.

Agate Vial for Wig-L-Bugs™

Agate is ideal for preparing most IR solid samples because it is inert and easy to clean. The agate vial for the Wig-L-Bug™ consists of a 2 part white Delrin® outer shell and a 3 part inner liner assembly comprised of an agate vial, an agate cap and a 6mm agate ball pestle. The inner agate vial assembly fits snugly into the Delrin® outer shell, and the entire assembly fits both the regular Wig-L-Bug with metal spoon arms and the digital Wig-L-Bug with plastic spoon arms. The need for a supplemental adapter to hold the vial in place that was required for prior versions of this vial has been eliminated—the assembly simply snaps into the space between the spoon arms of either Wig-L-Bug™.

PTFE Vial Assembly for Wig-L-Bugs™

PTFE is ideal for preparing most IR solid samples because it is inert and easy to clean. The PTFE vial for the Wig-L-Bug™ consists of a 2 part black Delrin® outer shell and a 3 part inner liner assembly comprised of a PTFE vial, a PTFE cap and a 6mm agate ball pestle. The ball is made from agate instead of PTFE because agate is harder and therefore produces better crushing and mixing action.

The PTFE vial assembly fits snugly into the Delrin® outer shell, and the entire assembly fits both the regular Wig-L-Bug with metal spoon arms and the digital Wig-L-Bug with plastic spoon arms. The need for a supplemental adapter to hold the vial in place that was required for prior versions of this vial has been eliminated—the assembly simply snaps into the space between the spoon arms of either Wig-L-Bug™.
